Apple holdings up 17%

About 49.7 million bushels of U.S.-grown fresh-market apples had yet to be shipped as of April 1, 17% more than last year at the same time.

April 1 holdings also were 18% higher than the five-year average, according to the April Market News report from the Vienna, Va.-based U.S. Apple Association.

About 48.1 million bushels of the U.S. total were Washington-grown, according to the report. About 484,000 bushels of New York apples and 417,000 bushels of Pennsylvania apples were still in storage.

Supplies of all major varieties were higher on April 1 than the year before. Red delicious fresh-market holdings rose from 17.5 million to 20.1 million bushels, fujis from 4.2 million to 7.4 million bushels, galas from 5.9 million to 7.1 million bushels, golden delicious from 5 million to 6.1 million bushels and granny smiths from 5.2 million to 5.3 million bushels.
