Apples

Apple holdings rise 4% over prior year

About 68.5 million bushels of apples were still in storage on Feb. 1, about 4% more than the year before, according to the February Market News report from the Vienna, Va.-based U.S. Apple Association.

The February total also was 4% higher than the five-year average.

By variety, red delicious and gala holdings were up and granny smith, golden delicious and fuji holdings were down in February.

Red delicious holdings rose from 21.5 million to 25 million bushels and galas from 9.5 million to 10.9 million bushels.

Granny smith holdings fell from 7.9 million to 7.8 million bushels, golden delicious from 8.2 million to 7.7 million bushels and fujis from 8.6 million to 7.3 million bushels.
