Giumarra to sell New Zealand cherries, apricots

Courtesy RD8 Fresh ProduceThe Giumarra Companies has partnered with New Zealand-based RD8 Fresh Produce to offer apricots and cherries in the U.S. New Zealand-based RD8 Fresh Produce will export apricots and cherries to the U.S. through a new partnership with The Giumarra Cos.

The cherries are shipping now through mid-February with a peak in mid-January, according to a news release. Apricots will harvest in early January and finish in early March.

The fruit will be available in the U.S. on both the East and West coasts.

“We are confident in the superior quality of this fruit and think it will be perfect to complement our stone fruit from Chile,” Craig Uchizono, southern hemisphere vice president for Los Angeles-based Giumarra Cos., said in the release.

The fruit is grown in New Zealand’s Central Otago region. RD8 Fresh Produce is based in Auckland. Craig Hall is managing director; Dean Astill heads sales and marketing.

“The apricot season is progressing well,” Astill said in the release. “Temperatures have lifted and the fruit is growing nicely.”

The company name is derived from the rural postal delivery service in New Zealand. Numbered routes became part of the address by which farms were identified.
