Avocados

79 million pounds of avocados expected for Super Bowl

Courtesy Hass Avocado Board An estimated 79 million pounds of avocados are expected to be served at parties and other events surrounding the Super Bowl Feb. 3.

That’s enough avocados to fill a football field end zone to end zone 30 feet deep, according to a news release from the Irvine, Calif.-based Hass Avocado Board.

This year’s expected total would top last year’s by close to 8 million pounds. Thirteen years ago, 8 million pounds of avocados were served around the Super Bowl.

The record volumes expected this year are due to continued soaring demand and an enormous Mexican crop.

About 986 million pounds of Mexican avocados will be shipped to the U.S. in 2012-13, up from 782 million pounds in 2011-12, according to the Association of Michoacán State Avocado Producers and Packers (APEAM).

Andy, 8 to 79 million avocados since 2000. This great product has suffered from undersupply for years. Now, as supply increases, we are learning that consumption/demand levels are much higher than anyone projected. By the way, my analysis concludes that 90 millions pounds of Hass avocados will be required to meet the demand of the Super Bowl events.
