USDA to offer citrus, avocado quarantine insurance in California

07/01/2009 02:00:00 AM

Beginning this fall, the U.S. Department of Agriculture will offer a pilot insurance program to California citrus and avocado growers to limit losses from pest quarantines.

The policies will cover quarantines imposed by the USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service or by the California Department of Food and Agriculture.

The policies will cover direct losses when crops can't be moved off of properties because of restrictions. It will not cover missed marketing opportunities.
