Port of Savannah officials extended Southern hospitality and Giumarra International Berry responded, selecting the port for its blueberry shipments from Chile this season.

The executive director of the Georgia Port Authority, Curtis Foltz, said in a news release that the port’s commitment to the refrigerated cargo market is aimed at clients such as Giumarra.

Alan Abe, East Coast manager for Giumarra, agreed. He said in the news release that the Port of Savannah’s streamlined flow is efficient and saves the produce company money. Abe also said the port authority has a high level of customer service, making the Savannah location even more attractive.

Both Abe and Foltz pointed to the easy access Savannah’s port provides for both rail service and Interstate 95 as being key factors in Giumarra’s decision to use the port. Abe said in the release that “saving money going north and west is the reason we are here.”

Giumarra’s first blueberries from Chile arrived at the port Jan. 8. Shipments are expected to continue through late March or early April, the release said.
