An organic biological product has been approved for the prevention of gray mold in grapes and berries.

Botector, which is marketed by Vista, Calif.-based Westbridge Agricultural Products, also prevents Anthracnose, Phomopsis and Rhizopus rot on berries, according to a company news release.

The California Department of Pesticide Regulation recently announced its approval of Botector, which is made by Tulln, Austria-based GmbH. Westbridge is the exclusive U.S. marketer of Botector.

Gray mold, which is caused by the fungus Botrytis cinerea, is a common disease that can cause up to 50% crop losses in grapes and berries and affect fruit quality.

Botector contains naturally occurring microorganisms that aggressively colonize and block the grey mold pathogen from infecting the flower or fruit surface, preventing the pathogen’s growth.

Even with frequent applications, pathogens cannot become resistant to Botector. Botector has been approved for use in organic grape and berry production by the Environmental Protection Agency and by the Washington State Department of Agriculture’s Organic Food Program.
