More Ocean Spray Craisins added to recall

In the wake of a short-lived packing line problem, Lakeville-Middleboro, Ma.-based Ocean Spray Cranberries Inc. has expanded a recall of Craisins dried cranberries.

On Dec. 2, five lots of Original Flavor Craisins distributed in Arizona, California, Colorado, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon and Washington were added to a Nov. 25 voluntary recall. The packages may contain tiny hair like metal fragments, said John Isaf, company spokesman.

“Ocean Spray experienced a malfunction on a piece of equipment on the production line at our Markham, Wash., dried cranberry manufacturing facility,” he said. “We’ve identified the source of the problem and corrective maintenance has been performed on the equipment and additional preventative maintenance and inspections have been instituted throughout our network.”

The fruit added to the recall was shipped in 5-, 10- and 48-ounce packages with use-by dates from Oct. 28 to Nov. 12.

There have been no reports of injuries linked to the recall, Isaf said. The expanded recall is “out of an abundance of caution to ensure the safety of our consumers,” he said.

The entire recall covers a small fraction of Ocean Spray’s volume.

“The pounds associated with the recall represent less than one-quarter of 1% of the total pounds we produce annually,” Isaf said.
