Production for the season, which ran May through January, topped 100 million for the first time, according to the California Table Grape Commission.
The total is equivalent to 100.1 million 19-pound boxes. For the year, 41% of the crop was exported.
“Grapes from California are a popular choice in the U.S. and around the world,” Kathleen Nave, commission president, said in a news release.
Historical benchmarks for California grape volumes by box count include:
- 1971: 20 million;
- 1982: 50 million;
- 1988: 60 million;
- 1995: 70 million; and
- 1997: 90 million.
According to the commission, research indicates 99% of primary grocery shoppers in the U.S. prefer California grapes over imports.
