(UPDATED COVERAGE 11:18 a.m.) Coosemans Worldwide Inc., is returning to the Los Angeles Wholesale Produce Market by opening California Specialty Farms, a specialty and organic produce division.
California Specialty Farms is continuing operations at its existing 16h Street location near the market while simultaneously expanding on the market with a new focus on organics, said Chick Goodman, Coosemans’ Soquel, Calif.-based vice president of sales and marketing.
The new market location opened June 16, he said.
Daniel Coosemans, company founder and chief executive officer, and James Macek, president of Coosemans Denver Inc., Coosemans Phoenix LLC, and California Specialty Farms, bought California Specialty Farms and its processing and shipping facility in 2010.
California Specialty Farms is a leading processor of the “California carrot,” the peeled baby carrot, as well as a variety of hand-turned and carved produce specialties, according to a news release.
“We had long been fans of California Specialty Farms products and personnel, so when the opportunity to purchase CSF arose, Danny and I jumped on it,” Macek said in a news release.
“The new location on the L.A. Market will help us to better serve the local and regional produce communities, and our product mix of organic and specialty produce (including a few new wrinkles), will be a nice addition to one of America’s most dynamic produce markets.”
Bruce Hoffman, a California Specialty Farms partner and vice president, has added specialty produce veteran Martha Zavala as the market division’s general manager.
Zavala previously worked with FreshPoint Inc., a subsidiary of Houston-based Sysco Corp., with Los Angeles-based Davalan Sales Inc., and Malibu, Calif.-based Malibu Farms.
“The Coosemans name is synonymous with specialty produce, and having the opportunity to work with Danny, James and Bruce, at our new LA Market Division, is an outstanding opportunity,” Zavala said in the release.
The company plans to host a formal grand opening ceremony this summer, Goodman said.
