Crown Jewels offers clamshell packs
Crown Jewels Produce LLC, which handles sales of conventionally grown pears for Greene & Hemly Inc., Courtland, Calif., plans to pack pears in four- and six-piece clamshells this season, said Atomic Torosian, a partner in Crown Jewels.
“It’s a little bit different,” he said. “It’s a little bit riper pear. We’re doing some experimenting with our packing program.”
Fresno, Calif.-based Crown Jewels Produce typically offers 36-pound tight-fill cartons, 40-pound wrap cartons, and 2- and 3-pound bags for some of the smaller fruit sizes.
David J. Elliot & Son opens chill facility
Just in time for this year’s pear season, David J. Elliot & Son, Courtland, Calif., has completed construction of a 50,000-square-foot cold-storage facility with a dedicated preconditioning room.
The facility features a refrigeration system that allows the firm to better and more quickly pre-cool the fruit as it comes in from orchards, said David Thiessen, sales manager.
“We’re really excited that we’ll be able to control the cold chain better then we historically have,” he said.
