Ingles was recognized for a 86% increase in pear sales over the year before, according to a news release from the Milwaukie, Ore.-based bureau.
The retailer’s recent success is due to the implementation of several new pear merchandising measures, Kevin Moffitt, the bureau’s president and chief executive officer, said in the release.
“Offering ripe pears on display was one of the top tactics that Ingles used to see pear sales at this level,” he said. “They also maintain multi-variety pear displays positioned at the front of the produce department, as well as secondary displays to increase visibility for this high impulse purchase fruit.”
In addition, Moffitt said, this season Ingles introduced bagged pears to attract value shoppers. Ingles is one of the industry leaders in engaging and educating shoppers in stores and online with the expertise of a supermarket dietitian, Moffitt said.
The bureau plans to present Ingles with the award at its booth at the Produce Marketing Association’s Fresh Summit in New Orleans this month.
