Banacol Marketing Corp. boosts yucca

Miami-based Banacol Marketing Corp. has additional yucca production out of Costa Rica this year, said Bill Sheridan, executive vice president of sales.

“Our plantain program has grown, as well,” he said. “We’ve had some really good success with both those items.”

Sheridan declined to provide volume figures or growth percentages for the items, citing proprietary reasons.

Central American starts pineapple deal

Pompano Beach, Fla.-based Central American Produce has just completed a shipping agreement with an undisclosed number of growers in Costa Rica to bring 25 loads of gold variety pineapples per week to the U.S., said Sabine Henry, saleswoman with Central American.

The first shipment arrived April 1, she said.

The product is to be shipped under the CAPCO label until a permanent brand can be developed, Henry said.

Ecoripe Tropicals adds warehouse space

In November, Medley, Fla.-based Ecoripe Tropicals completed an expansion of its warehouse from 3,000 to 6,000 square feet, said Marc Holbik, chief executive officer.

“We’re expanding our product line, so we needed more space,” he said.

The company, which imports a line of up to 25 tropical fruit items, also earned its PrimusLabs certification for food safety at the end of 2011, Holbik said.

Tropical Fruit Growers chooses president

Homestead, Fla.-based Tropical Fruit Growers of South Florida Inc. has a new leader.

Steve Green, a professor at the University of Miami, who also is an organic lychee grower, is now president of the organization. He succeeded Louise King, who had served as president for five years and now is vice president.

Green assumed the presidency at the organization’s monthly meeting in March, King said.

Turbana beefs up line of tropicals

Coral Gables, Fla.-based Turbana Corp. has expanded its tropical lineup, said Mike Potts, the company’s Philadelphia-based category director for tropicals.

“It’s a natural extension of our plan to be able to offer retailers and jobbers a full line of tropicals,” he said.

Turbana has a roster of up to 15 tropical items, depending on the season, Potts said. He declined to specify the items.
