Ocean Mist Farms and Rouses Supermarkets made a bid for a world-record fresh artichoke display as they assembled 20,000 green globes and a 256 square-foot fleur-de-lis artichoke-filled ornament in New Orleans.
The display took 20 hours to build and was photographed and measured April 21 for certification by the Guinness Book of World Records, according to a news release. The event was at the Rouses outlet at 4500 Tchoupitoulas Street.
The fleur-de-lis, a symbol of New Orleans and its NFL team, the Saints, was suspended above the display.
“Artichokes are a big part of our food culture here in New Orleans, and we did a little investigating and learned there is no record-setting display for fresh vegetables,” Joe Watson, director of produce at Rouses Supermarkets, said in the release.
Arti the artichoke — mascot for Castroville, Calif.-based Ocean Mist Farms — and Dale Huss, the company’s vice president of artichoke production, came to the unveiling.
Rouses showed shoppers how to clean and prepare an artichoke for cooking, and served a recipe for easy baked artichokes with chipotle mayo.
