Michigan asparagus growers vote on whether to continue marketing order

02/26/2008 02:00:00 AM

Between Feb. 25 and March 7, Michigan asparagus producers will  be able to vote on whether to continue the Michigan Asparagus Industry Development Program.

Growers should have already received a referendum ballot. Eligible producers with questions or those not receiving a ballot should contact the Michigan Department of Agriculture at (800) 292-3939.

Established in 1978, the marketing order supports research and helps create additional marketing opportunities. The program was last approved by a referendum in 2003. By law, the program must be resubmitted for grower approval every five years. Currently, the assessment is 1-1/2 cents per pound of asparagus.

For the program to be renewed, more than 50 percent of the producer must approve continuation, and they must represent more than 50 percent of the total number of pounds represented on the cast ballots.

Each producer, partnership or corporation is entitled to only one vote.

All ballots must be filled out completely, signed, and postmarked by March 7. They should be mailed to MDA, Executive Office, P.O. Box 30017, Lansing, MI 48909.
