Val Verde Vegetable Co. has added cauliflower and green onions to its Texas vegetable offerings.
The McAllen, Texas-based leafy greens grower began shipping cauliflower and green onions from the Rio Grande Valley the week of Jan. 23, according to a Val Verde news release.
Better varieties and higher transportation costs from California have provided a window for Texas to re-enter the cauliflower market, according to the release.
“We believe our centralized location and the current economy, with its continued increase in costs related to production and freight, are starting to give us an advantage over California,” Frank Schuster, Val Verde’s president, said in the release.
In addition to growing cauliflower and green onions in Texas this year, Val Verde also is growing Malabar spinach, golden beets and romaine lettuce on a trial basis.
