Jacobs Farm/Del Cabo to launch Fair Trade line at PMA

Jacobs Farm/Del Cabo is introducing items at Fresh Summit 2012.Courtesy Jacobs Farm/Del Cabo Jacobs Farm/Del Cabo plans to introduce several new retail organic packs and unveil a line of Fair Trade-certified fruits and vegetables at the Produce Marketing Association’s Fresh Summit, Oct. 27-28, in Anaheim, Calif.

The Pescadero, Calif.-based grower-shipper also is finalizing production plans for a living basil and herb line, expected to be launched by Jacobs Farm in early 2013, said Marina Pace, marketing director.

The certified-organic plants are grown hydroponically.

They will be packaged with roots still attached in poly sleeves with care instructions.

Living basil will be the first to be offered, followed by other living herbs.

Consumers put them in a glass with a small amount of water to keep them alive.

“They can harvest what they need when they need it,” she said.

The company also plans to introduce three-count garlic in net bags, onions in 3-pound net bags, ginger root in 4-ounce packs, green beans in 12-ounce bags and three-count bagged zucchini — all organic.

The products had been available in bulk.

In addition, Jacobs Farm/Del Cabo is broadening offerings with a line of Fair Trade-certified fruits and vegetables that includes bananas, specialty tomatoes, avocados, mangos and limes.

“Our produce line has always been organic, but we’re adding other products that have Fair Trade certification,” Mace said.
