Fresco Green Farms recalls cilantro for possible salmonella

Fresco Green Farms cliantro boxCourtesy Fresco Green Farms Inc.Recalled cilantro from Fresco Green Farms Inc., Winchester,Calif., was shipped in boxes like this. The labels say: "Fresco Green Farms Inc., Hemet, CA. Produce of USA cilantro 2.5dz" Fresco Green Farms Inc. is voluntarily recalling 1,643 cases of cilantro distributed in California and Minnesota because of possible salmonella contamination.

No illnesses have been reported, and a spokesman from the Winchester, Calif.-based company said most if not all of the product has likely been sold or removed from store shelves. The cilantro was harvested July 18-27.

“A random sample at a distribution center in Minnesota showed positive for listeria. They took the sample July 23 and notified us Aug. 9,” said Carlos Martinez, Fresco Green Farms manager.

According to the Aug. 9 recall notice, the cilantro was on store shelves in California and Minnesota beginning July 19 and likely sold or removed from sale before Aug. 6. The U.S. Department of Agriculture discovered the salmonella in a random test.

The cilantro is bunched and tied together with a brown rubber band. Each bunch has the following dimensions; 10 inches long and 1¼-inch wide. The individual bunches have no identifying labels or lot numbers. They were distributed in shipping cases labeled “Fresco Green Farms Inc., Hemet, CA. Produce of USA cilantro 2.5dz.”

Your facts are wrong. The sample was collected on July 30, 2012, not July 23rd.
