To-Jo adopts SG Systems traceability program

To-Jo Fresh Mushrooms Inc. is expanding its use of the SG Systems traceability program.

To-Jo Fresh Mushrooms The Avondale, Pa.-based grower-shipper made the investment in the Dallas-based SG Systems LLC’s paperless traceability system to gain Milestone 7 Produce Traceability Initiative compliance.

Mike Wood, To-Jo’s vice president of fresh operations, said To-Jo began using SG Systems in December 2009 and is now providing hybrid pallet tags, one of PTI’s final requirements.

Hybrid tags make it easier for retailers to scan cartons in their systems.

With one scan, customers can read all the information about the product on the pallet, Wood said.

“The hybrid pallets are the bridge for our customers to have easy access to all our information, lot numbers, cases, GTINs (Global Trade Identification Numbers),” he said. “With one scan, they know all the history behind that shipment, the final stage.”

The system takes To-Jo to the next level as well in inventory management, Wood said.

He said To-Jo is using SG Systems to monitor all orders and all incoming product.

Other Kennett Square, Pa., and North American mushroom growers and packers have viewed To-Jo’s installation and plan to use it in their systems, Wood said.

He said To-Jo’s owners, the D’Amico family, feels traceability is an industry issue and wants others to discover the savings To-Jo experienced.

To-Jo ships all types of fresh, processed and wild mushrooms and plans to ship 50 million pounds this year, up 11% from last year, Wood said.
