The company has increased organic acreage 25%.Boskovich Farms is entering its second year of organic production in Holtville, Calif., with increases in its volume and selection of vegetables.

Acreage is up 25% this year in the California desert operation, said Peter Oill, organic sales manager for Oxnard, Calif.-based Boskovich Farms.

“We’ve added broccoli, celery, different kinds of spinach, some cabbage plus all the bunched greens,” Oill said.

Harvesting was expected to start shortly before Thanksgiving on crops including cilantro, parsleys and some chards, which are faster growing than others in the lineup. Kale and collards will follow.

Supplies will increase in December.

“We’ll go to about April,” Oill said. At that point insect pressure on organic crops is likely to become significant enough to end production.

“The demand for organics keeps growing,” he said. “More people are getting into it now. We wanted to have more items.”
