Pero makes big donation to breast cancer research

NEW ORLEANS — Pero Family Farms is donating $33,500 to breast cancer research.

On Oct. 19, the Delray Beach, Fla.-based grower-shipper presented the contribution to the Frisco, Texas-based National Breast Cancer Foundation Inc., at the Produce Marketing Association’s Fresh Summit 2013 expo.

During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Pero is supporting the cause as part of its “We support … Early Detection. Cure. Prevention” charitable giving program through its contributions as well as sales of a variety of Pero-labeled fresh vegetable products.

Pero plans to label more than 1 million packages of conventional and organic snipped green beans, snipped green beans with squash and carrots, mini sweet peppers, mini sweet peppers with snipped green beans, mini seedless cucumbers and fajita mix with the campaign.

Pero was introduced to the Pink Ribbon Produce fundraising and education effort that supports research and prevention efforts through Meijer Inc., Grand Rapids, Mich.

Pero Family Farms“Pero is a great partner to work on this,” said Mark Stevenson, Meijer’s director of produce merchandising. “It’s a big effort and we appreciate all they do. This is an example of how the produce industry itself is always looking to help people in times of need.”

Bryan Vardilos, the foundation’s vice president of operations, said the organization helps fund mammograms and early detection programs.

“We are thankful and proud to be working with such a great organization like Pero,” he said. “It’s all about relationships and how we do business.”

Pero officials say they hope the contribution will continue to positively affect research well into the future.

“We saw an opportunity to go above and beyond for this cause,” Frank Pero, executive vice president, said in a news release. “We thank Meijer and all of our retail partners for helping us offer our vegetables to consumers so we can all make a difference together.”
