Idaho grower-shipper meeting approaches
The Idaho Falls-based Idaho Grower Shippers Association will have its spring meeting March 22 in Idaho Falls.
President Travis Blacker said speakers include Dennis Milne, director of business relations for the American Heart Association; Pat Linden, business manager for food and refrigerated products for Union Pacific; and Luke Gowdy, operations manager for C.H. Robinson Worldwide Inc.
Milne will provide information about AHA’s heart-check mark program.
Linden will speak about new online tools to help track freight and secure rail cars as well as give a rail update, and Gowdy will give a transportation update.
IGSA members are asked to RSVP by March 19.
National Potato Council meeting slated for July
The National Potato Council’s summer meeting has been scheduled for July 11-13 in Bar Harbor, Maine.
John Keeling, executive vice president and chief executive officer of the Washington, D.C.-based council, said about 170 people are expected to attend the event.
The agenda includes review of the council’s policies and strategies. Keeling said the event also will incorporate a farm tour.
“This event connects growers from various parts of country and gives them an opportunity to see how things are done in different places,” he said.
Okray Family Farms adds industry veteran
Mike Barker has joined Okray Family Farms Inc., Plover, Wis., as facilities manager.
President Dick Okray said Barker is responsible for the company’s security needs, seed cutting, storage and more than two dozen buildings.
Barker previously worked for Midwestern Farms Inc., Plainfield, Wis., and has been in the industry for two decades.
“He’s a smart, sharp guy,” Okray said. “We’re very lucky to have him.”
Okray also has added a Volm bagger, Okray said.
He said the new bagger will increase speed and efficiency.
Red River Valley group picks board member
Bryan Folson, president of Folson Farms, Inc., East Grand Forks, Minn., has been selected to the board of the Red River Valley Fresh Potato Growers Cooperative.
Ted Kreis, marketing director of the East Grand Forks-based Northern Plains Potato Growers Association, said Folson will serve a three-year term.
Folson succeeds Greg Hall, owner of J.G. Hall & Sons, Edinburg, N.D., whose term had expired.
Wilcox Fresh hires sales manager
Jason Marco has joined Rexburg, Idaho-based Wilcox Fresh as a sales manager for the Northeast in the company’s Bath, Maine, office.
Executive vice president of sales and marketing Jim Richter said Marco previously worked in the banking and investment industry.
