Pumpkins

Pink Pumpkin Patch to aid cancer research

Courtesy DP Seeds LLCThis new pumpkin variety, Porcelain Doll F1, developed by DP Seeds LLC will be available for the first time in 2012. A charitable non-profit entity called the Pink Pumpkin Patch is being formed to funnel a portion of sales revenue from the new pumpkins to breast cancer research. An unintended discovery during plant breeding research has led to a plan for a new charitable entity to help with breast cancer research via pumpkins.

DP Seeds LLC of Yuma, Ariz., recently announced the release of Porcelain Doll F1 pumpkin seeds. When mature, the pumpkins have light pink skins and vibrant orange flesh, according to company president Kevin Skaling. He said DP Seeds had been researching various colorful fruit exteriors and interiors for about six years, but the pink pumpkins were not among the projects on the drawing board.

“We discovered Porcelain Doll F1 in our trials three years ago and have perfected the hybrid to release it in the fall of 2011,” Skaling said. “Porcelain Doll F1 has strong PMR (powdery mildew resistance), full vine plant habit and is fully mature at 100 days.”

The plan is to have the new pumpkin variety available at retailers in the fall of 2012 for Breast Cancer Awareness month in October and the Halloween holiday.

In conjunction with the launch of the Porcelain Doll F1 pumpkins a 501c3 organization is planned. Dubbed the Pink Pumpkin Patch, the organization will make a donation to breast cancer research for every pink pumpkin sold.

Golden Sun Marketing is partnering with DP Seeds on the Pink Pumpkin Patch, and plans a marketing campaign that will include a social media campaign and merchandise bins and stickers for retailers. Golden Sun president Don Goodwin said in a news release that it is seeking retailers and growers to help with the project.

Very interested in cancer research and sounds like it would be a good marketing tool.
