Assurance GDS MPX Top 7 STEC is a method that tests E. coli O157:H7 and six non-O157 shiga toxigenic E. coli — or STEC.
The second method is sequential, using the first followed by Assurance GDS Shiga Toxin Genes to detect the top seven serogroups of STEC, including O157.
Both are genetic methods and have been tested on spinach, mixed greens, raw ground beef and raw beef trim.
Results take 10 to 12 hours, depending on sample size — 25 grams versus 375 grams.
BioControl Systems’ Assurance Genetic Detection System (GDS) line has assays for a variety of pathogens that also include salmonella, listeria monocytogenes, listeria spp., and cronobacter. They’ve been validated by AOAC and other third parties, among them MicroVal, Health Canada, AFNOR and several multinational food manufacturing companies.
Both methods also received letters of no objection from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Safety Inspection Service last year.
