The Society of St. Andrew, a hunger relief organization, and its Potato & Produce Project recently took 10,000 pounds of sweet potatoes to Mobile, Ala.

The sweet potatoes were salvaged after commercial markets and potato chip factories declined to buy the potatoes because of slight imperfections.

A large group of volunteers broke down the shipment into more manageable sizes of 5-8 pounds a bag at Chickasaw United Methodist Church on the Crop Drop on Saturday, Sept. 27.

The sweet potatoes were given to needy families in the region as well as these agencies: Ashland Place United Methodist Church’s Joseph Project, the S.O.U.P Kitchen, Innercity Mission, Waterfront Rescue Mission, Mission of Hope, Have of Hope, Wings of Life, Prodisee Pantry and Grand Bay United Methodist were all given an ample supply of sweet potatoes.
