After remaining the same for the past two years, cantaloupe purchases jumped 15 percentage points from Fresh Trends 2009, making the commodity one of the highest for year-to-year growth. The likelihood of purchase increased according to income and age.
The overall numbers show that there is little difference in purchasing patterns between households with children and those without. Single shoppers were the least likely to buy the orange-fleshed melon, trailing married consumers by 17 percentage points.
The likelihood of organic purchase dropped 50% from Fresh Trends 2009, with 7% of cantaloupe buyers saying they bought organic product at least some of the time. Of those that bought organic cantaloupe, 44% said they paid the same or less for organic melon as they would’ve paid for conventionally grown product. Western shoppers were most likely to buy organic cantaloupe exclusively.
