Grapefruit purchases slipped two percentage points in the past year, putting purchases nearly level with numbers from Fresh Trends 2008. The likelihood of purchase increased according to household income, with those earning more than $100,000 annually being among the most likely to buy the citrus fruit. Consumers age 40-49 comprised the group most likely to make a purchase, while younger shoppers age 21-39 were the least likely to buy.
The likelihood of organic purchase dropped 11 percentage points from Fresh Trends 2009, with only nine percent of grapefruit consumers saying they bought organic fruit in the past year. Of those that bought organic grapefruit, one-third said they did so every time they made a grapefruit purchase. Shoppers aged 40-49 were the most likely group to buy organic grapefruit exclusively.
