California growers donate watermelons to festival

Sunland-Tujunga Lions Club Watermelon FestivalThe 53rd annual Sunland-Tujunga Lions Club Watermelon Festival is scheduled for July 19-20 at Santa Anita Park, Arcadia, Calif.

There will be watermelon games, a recipe contest, cooking demonstrations, and a watermelon carving competition that will be judged by a panel of celebrity chefs, including Chef Joseph Poon.

A vintage car club will be displaying classic cars at the event and Rose Royce, The Finalists, Elliott Yamin and Melissa Jiminez will be some of the musical performing at the festival.

Growers who plan to donate watermelons for the event include George Perry & Sons, Manteca, Calif., Pappas & Co., Mendota, Calif., Kirschenman Enterprises Inc., Bakersfield, Calif., Van Groningen & Sons Inc., Manteca, and Thomson International Inc., Bakersfield, Calif.

Funds raised by the Watermelon Festival will be used to support local youth and community activities, disaster relief, and health and vision programs in California, nationally and internationally.
