In each of five of the six weeks preceding Sept. 13, more than 4 million boxes of grapes shipped, according to a news release from the Fresno-based California Table Grape Commission.
In 2012, only one week in the entire California table grape season surpassed 4 million boxes.
“Grapes from California are in strong demand worldwide,” Kathleen Nave, the commission’s president, said in the release. “With nearly 45 million boxes shipped, the industry is on pace for another record crop year.”
In August, the industry shipped 18.4 million boxes of California grapes, a record for the month, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The industry estimates 105.7 million boxes will be shipped this season. Supplies should be available through January, according to the commission.
