CHICAGO — Teri Miller’s career at Food Lion has taken her from the neat and predictable rows of numbers in accounting to the messy whirlwind of produce.

Once called too tender-hearted for business, Miller, produce category manager for Delhaize America, Salisbury, N.C., found her way through persistence, and a willingness to stand up to the boss.

“My dad raised me to think ‘Be a Man”, and I don’t want you to take that the wrong way,” Miller said as she addressed the Women in Produce reception at United Fresh 2014. “What that means is to have integrity, to treat people fairly.”

Miller, an outspoken leader in produce, particularly in the realm of food safety and produce traceability, said she doesn’t feel she’s accomplished all that needs to be done to deserve annual Women in Produce recognition.

“I’ve studied the 16 women who have been honored before me, and the impact they’ve had on the industry,” Miller said. “I think it’s important that I have that kind of impact, so to be chosen here is truly humbling.”

Lisa McNeece, vice president of foodservice and industrial sales for Grimmway Farms, last year’s Women in Produce honoree, said Miller is a true industry leader.

“She is very deserving of this honor,” McNeece said. “She’s compassionate, caring and selfless. I see her not just as a customer, but a genuine friend.”
