SAN DIEGO — After a career that began as a retail clerk at Safeway and lead to leadership at Dole Fresh Fruit Co., Mike Cavallero was awarded The Packer’s 2013 Produce Man for All Seasons Award.

Johnson said a peer of Cavallero’s considers him “the epitome of everything good about the produce industry.”
“This is really dedicated to the good people I’ve worked with,” Cavallero said.
The San Francisco native’s career at Dole began working in technical services in the fresh fruit division before being promoted to director of marketing services.
Cavallero then went to sales in Dole’s fresh vegetable division, where he was promoted first to eastern division sales manager and then vice president of sales for fresh vegetables.
Twenty years after joining Dole, he went back to the fresh fruit division as vice president of sales for tropicals and then vice president of sales and marketing for the company.
For the past dozen years, Cavallero has been president of North American tropical fresh fruit, overseeing Dole’s fresh banana, tropical fruit and deciduous sales, port operations and marketing.
His service to the industry includes volunteer posts for the Produce Marketing Association, International Banana Association and United Fresh.
