“We’re getting a plan together, selling our house and looking at what I need to focus on when I get there,” said Wilkins, a Lubbock, Texas, native who was previously produce procurement director for United Supermarkets, now known as The United Family.
Grow Farms Texas is a joint venture between Ciruli Brothers LLC, Nogales, Ariz., and Horton Fruit, Louisville, Ky.
Ciruli's chief operations officer Chris Ciruli said Grow Farms Texas is a sales office and repacker, serving a number of growers in the U.S. and Mexico. The Ciruli and Horton companies began the joint effort in 2010.
Wilkins said in his new role with Grow Farms Texas one of his first tasks will be to review the physical plant and procedures in Donna so that he can more effectively help develop business opportunities for the growers and better serve the retailers who buy their produce.
He said he will be looking at cross-docking and other aspects of operations with an eye toward streamlining processes to speed delivery.
“I’m very excited,” Wilkins said Sept. 10. “I don’t think I will be competing with anyone that I’ve worked for and hopefully my background will mean we can figure out how to move more product through McAllen and ease the logistics for the people on the coasts who are buying it.”
