Diary of a Recall

Pamela RiemenschneiderCostco's automated system told me this box of peaches potentially was recalled. It took several phone calls and two hours on hold to confirm it wasn't. What does this tell ordinary consumers who maybe aren't as persistent as I? Here’s the process I’ve gone through so far to figure out if my peaches are the ones that were recalled by Cutler, Calif.-based Wawona Packing Co. I should be hyper aware of this because I actually ate half of a Jensen Farms Rocky Ford cantaloupe during the recall back in 2011.

I didn’t realize what I was doing until I mused that it was a particularly tasty piece of fruit, and then I remembered the recall and ran to the trash to look at the PLU.

Sunday afternoon:

Searched Costco shelves to find the peaches we’d bought a week prior and absolutely loved. Buy a box we think was the same. They’re not quite ready to eat so I leave them on the counter to soften up.

Monday:

6:18 a.m. – I see an email from Indianapolis Fruit Co. about the recall. I glance at the box when I get up for coffee and decide mine aren’t recalled because they weren’t from Wawona Packing.

10:15 a.m. – Read Coral’s story in The Packer, check my box again. Nah, I don’t think these are the recalled fruit. They’re not quite ready to eat.

Tuesday:

8:00 a.m. – Ike, 5, and my mom are eating peaches for breakfast. The baby, 6 months, just started solids last night (avocados!) so he’s not eating peaches.

10:13 a.m. – Automated system from Costco robo-calls me to tell me that I bought recalled peaches. But only a certain number. I race downstairs to look at the box while the robo-guy is rattling off the number. I don’t think I have it. Relief.

10:20 a.m. – Look up the recall notice again to confirm that I don’t have the recalled box. I can’t tell. There are so many numbers and I’m just not sure. Consider tossing box of peaches. But I love peaches. If these aren’t recalled, I want to eat them.

10:40 a.m. – Still trying to figure out if my $#^%@# box of peaches is under the recall. You’d think my powers of research are better than this considering I’ve been writing about produce for nearly nine years. Imagining what Average Joe consumer thinks at this point.

10:45 – Go back down to the kitchen to look at the box again. Thought pops into my head – hey! Maybe it’s the box of peaches we ate last week? Go out to the recycle bin and check. Not sure.
