The plaque is for the inaugural shipment of grapes from Peru into Miami, Fla.Port Miami ushered in its first ever shipment of Peruvian grapes Nov. 18. American importer Alpine Fresh Inc. and Peruvian grower Complejo Beta were the first team to bring the grapes directly to Southeastern states.

Prior to this shipment, Peruvian grapes could only be imported to the U.S. through ports in Los Angeles and New York. Each shipment must go through cold treatment before entering U.S. borders.

Alpine Fresh chief executive officer, Walter Yager, understands the convenience of importing through Port Miami, for his company and consumers in the Southeast.

“Importing directly to Miami, Fla., will save us the cost of freight in having to bring the grapes from New York to Miami, allowing Alpine Fresh Inc. to provide consumers with fresher product at a lower cost,” said Yager in a news release.
