Time is running out, but it’s not too late to make your voice heard regarding proposed rules related to the Food Safety Modernization Act.

Jan. 27 is the deadline to comment on a proposed rule related to Foreign Supplier Verification Programs and Accreditation of Third-Party Auditors/Certification Bodies.

March 15 is the deadline to comment on the Notice to Determin Scope for the Environmental Impact Statement on the Proposed Produce Safety Rule.

Finally, March 31 is the deadline to comment on the proposed rule regarding Focused Mitigation Strategies to Protect Food Against Intentional Adulteration.

The Foreign Supplier Verification Program would strengthen the oversight of imported foods, which account for 15% of the nation’s food supply. Under the regulations, importers would be required to perform risk-based activities. For example, importers would be responsible for reviewing the compliance status of food and foreign suppliers before importing it. Reviews would cover things such as FDA warning letters and import alerts.

Importers also would be required to analyze the hazards associated with each product they import and provide assurances that hazards identified are adequately controlled through auditing, testing and periodic review of foreign suppliers’ food safety records.

Importers would be required to review complaints they receive concerning their products, investigate problems and take corrective actions. They also would be required to keep records, including those that document compliance status reviews, hazard analyses, foreign supplier verification activities, investigations and corrective actions.

The proposed rule regarding third-party auditors sets eligibility requirements for recognition as an accreditation body.
