In just seven months, the Houston-based foodservice distributor has built its organic line into a nearly $3 million, year-round supplier, said Brent Erenwert, the company’s vice president.
“We kept getting asked and asked, and we finally decided to just take a leap and see what happens,” Erenwert said. “It’s paid off.”
Brothers now stocks more than 65 organic items. Berries, leafy greens, stone fruit, apples and tomatoes are the biggest sellers, Erenwert said.
In the next year, Brothers expects organic sales to increase by 75-80%, Erenwert said.
Brothers built the foundation of the category with its Austin clientele, but Houston customers are now also on board, he said.
The company sees a similar customer base for local and organic produce, Erenwert said. With Texas’ heat, local isn’t always an option, so Brothers decided to tap into that demographic with organics, he said.
