Busy moms are the inspiration behind a new carrot product from Grimmway Farms that is expected to be available in retailers’ produce aisles Nov. 1.
Simply Delicious Carrot Creations, 13-ounce bags of fresh petite carrots come in two flavors: roasted garlic with herbs and honey, brown sugar and cinnamon. Bob Borda, vice president of marketing for Bakersfield, Calif.-based Grimmway, said the Carrot Creations have been in development for about eight months.
“Moms are time starved but still trying to find healthy alternatives to help bring their families back to the dinner table,” Borda said. “With the Carrot Creations they can have a healthy, hot side dish in three to four minutes and it’s only 70 calories per serving.”
The carrots, packaged in microwaveable bags that also contain a 1-ounce dollop of butter and seasonings, steam and marinate at the same time.
Borda said the added flavors make carrots more appealing, especially to children, and the convenience of the microwavable packaging is appealing to busy adults. The quick cooking time gets meals on the table faster and there aren’t any preparation pans or utensils to wash when the meal is finished.
Suggested retail prices for the new products range from $2.49 to $2.79, depending on location, Borda said. He said retailers desires played into Grimmway’s development of the product.
“Retailers are looking for in novative products to complement standard categories in produce,” Borda said. “This product gives them that innovation.”
Borda said that technology for the “flavor dollop” has been used by the frozen sector for years, but recent advancements have made it more applicable to the fresh sector. He said the Grimmway Carrot Creations don’t require special handling or storage, even though they include a butter dollop.
“They have the same temperature requirements as our petite carrots,” Borda said, which is 36-38 degrees Fahrenheit.
