The Southern Hemisphere mandarins will be available under the label August through October. They’re sourced from Chile, Peru and South Africa.
Clementines run June through August. Summer fruit at the Vero Beach, Fla.-based shipper also includes navels, minneola tangelos and cara cara oranges.
Mandarina’s packaging depicts a cartoon likeness of a child embracing the fruit plus a tagline, “Eats Like Candy!”
The new entry in the easy-peel market relies on proprietary mandarin varieties developed over the past decade.
“The brand is new; the varieties have been tested in the market for the last three years,” said chief executive officer Mayda Sotomayor-Kirk. “We wanted to acknowledge this special variety with a significant brand.”
“Customers were asking for a kid-attractive brand as well as a differentiation of the variety,” Sotomayor-Kirk said. The aim is to promote healthy snacking for children.
