Dan GalbraithKey account manager Brian Kennedy, right, explains the finer points of the company's Omega ADW-O-1214S Fresh Produce Weigher. Mequon, Wis.-based Yamato Corp. is in the process of installing its new TSDW Semi-Automatic Combination Weigher at KLeamington, Ontario-based Pure Hot House Foods, where it will be used for packaging of red, green and yellow peppers, said Michael Taylor, vice president of new business development.

Taylor said he looks for other fresh produce business from grape processors in the near future.

“More and more end-users are moving to fixed-weight packaging on their shelves rather than random-weight packaging because it’s so much simpler to just change one price in the computer, and this solves the problem for weighing of fragile products,” he said.

The cost of the machine ranges from $60,000-$70,000 but the cost savings it produces more than offset the cost of the TSDW in less than one year, Taylor said.

The TSDW, showed off Sept. 23-25 at Pack Expo 2013 in Las Vegas, features IP-65 washdown and could also be used for products like mushrooms and other fresh vegetables and fruits, processing at speeds of up to 30 per minute.

Yamato’s Fresh Produce Weigher is also new this year, featuring IP-67 washdown.

“It can withstand 150 kilograms of force, so it solves damage issues that may typically arise during the sanitation process,” Taylor said.

The company also recently expanded its operations by opening of an office and demo center in Lake Forest, Calif., the first expansion of Yamato’s Automatic & Commercial Weighing Solutions Division.

“The Lake Forest location will serve Yamato’growing West Coast customer base with local parts and service as well as regional sales support. The demo center includes ample space for full integration and testing with VFFS bag machines as well as other packaging solutions,” a company news release said.
