Kroger recalls bagged spinach from California supplier

Recalled Kroger Fresh Selections Tender SpinachThe Kroger Co. voluntarily recalled these 10-ounce bags of spinach supplied by NewStar Fresh Foods LLC, Salinas,Calif., on Sept. 19 even though they had use-by dates of Sept. 16, citing an abundance of caution. Media reports the Ohio Department of Health got a positive result for listeria from one bag it randomly sampled.The Kroger Co. recalled an unknown amount of bagged spinach distributed in 15 states because of possible listeria contamination.

NewStar Fresh Foods LLC, Salinas, Calif., supplied the spinach, according to a recall notice posted Sept. 19 on the Food and Drug Administration website.

Officials from NewStar Fresh did not immediately respond to calls for comment Sept. 19, but a report in USA Today said the recall was in response to a positive test from a single bag sampled by the Ohio Department of Health.

The recalled spinach is in 10-ounce packages with the Kroger Fresh Selections brand and use-by dates of Sept. 16. The packages have the Universal Price Code 0001111091649.

Kroger reported the spinach was distributed to stores in 15 states overall under several of the chain’s banners.

Those states and stores:Kroger stores in Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, central and eastern Tennessee and Michigan; Kroger, Jay C, Owen’s, Pay Less, Scott’s and Food 4 Less stores in Indiana, Illinois and eastern Missouri; and Dillons, Baker’s, and Gerbes stores in Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska.

Appears NewStar can produce tainted spinach but can't comment on it.
