Gargiulo Inc. will close its Somis, Calif., farm and packing operations effective April 1, the company told Ventura County officials.

The move is expected to bring an end to 677 jobs. Of those, 486 are in farming operations – mostly pickers and general labor. The rest are packinghouse jobs.

The Naples, Fla.-based tomato grower-shipper gave the advance notice to the county’s board of supervisors Jan. 31.

The employees are not members of a union, Gargiulo operations manager Terry Doyle said in the notice.

Last July at a separate Gargiulo site in Firebaugh, Calif., workers voted 186-40 to join United Farm Workers of America.

My father was there to visit that plant a few years ago. He used to visit that plant for maintenance regularly. Guess I won't be going there.
