Vidalia onion growers are scheduled to vote on the continuation of the industry’s marketing order.

USDAThe referendum, Sept. 9-27, is established by the group’s bylaws, which mandate the vote on whether to continue the marketing order every six years. Through the order, growers are assessed per-carton fees to support industry marketing and promotions.

Eligible voters must have produced Vidalia onions within the designated production area in Georgia in 2012, according to a U.S. Department of Agriculture news release.

If fewer than two-thirds of the growers voting in the referendum and growers who produce less than two-thirds of the Vidalia onion volume represented in the referendum vote against continuing, the USDA would consider ending the marketing order, according to the release.

The USDA published notice of the referendum, http://tinyurl.com/neds3nx, in the July 30 Federal Register.
