Jazz applesThe Oppenheimer Group’s Jazz apple variety got a mention on the Jeopardy! television quiz show.

During the double Jeopardy round July 19, host Alex Trebek gave a $2,000 clue in a category on apples: “The royal gala and braeburn were crossed to get this variety with a musical name,” he said.

None of the players rang in, leaving Trebek to name Jazz as the answer. The segment is online at www.facebook.com/jazzapple.

“We got a pretty big kick out of seeing Jazz on Jeopardy!,” Roger Aguirre, West Coast apple and pear category and sales manager at the Oppenheimer Group, said in a news release. “It illustrates that Jazz has truly hit the mainstream. Though even the brightest trivia experts may not know its parentage, millions more people have heard of it now.”

Other apples mentioned in the category included red delicious, mcintosh, and granny smith.

Jazz typically features in the top selling 10 apples at U.S. retailers, according to Aguirre.
