New Happy MealMcDonalds Corp. wants to know if consumers want a salad — or fruit — with their meal in lieu of less nutritious side options.

The Oak Brook, Ill.-based company partnered with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation and American Heart Association to offer more fruit and vegetable options with its meals. The options are available in 20 of the restaurant’s largest markets, representing 85% of the company’s global sales, according to a news release.

The company committed to providing customers “a choice of side salad, fruit or vegetable as a substitute for french-fries in value meals” but specified that salad, fruit or vegetable options would vary depending on the participating market.

The company also made changes to its Happy Meal policy, removing sodas as options advertised in stores and in the marketplace. Patrons can still order soda with a Happy Meal, however.

McDonalds plans to include nutrition and well-being messages on Happy Meal boxes and bag panels, and ensure all ads aimed at children will “include a fun nutrition or children’s well-being message.” New packaging will “generate excitement for fruit, vegetable, low/reduced calorie dairy or water options for kids,” according to a news release.

The markets participating in the initiative are:

  • U.S.
  • Argentina
  • Australia
  • Austria
  • Brazil
  • Canada
  • China (including Hong Kong)
  • France
  • Germany
  • Italy
  • Japan
  • Netherlands
  • Poland
  • Russia
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • Switzerland
  • Taiwan
  • United Kingdom

I believe this is called a "Press Release". The only people who go to McDonalds for healthy meals are people who are incapable for whatever reason (maybe work schedule?)preparing meals at home. McDonalds is not that inexpensive that the average family could eat the majority of their meals there, apples and salad are a fraction of the cost at home. You can get Orange Juice in a Bar, but that's not why you go to a Bar. You can get healthy meals now at McDonalds, but that's not why you go to McDonalds.

Kurt, People go to fast food restaurants for any number of reasons and the trend in having healthful items (not just at McDonald's but at numerous quick-service brands) is giving diners the ability to make better choices. Yes, the best choice (if you're considering health and health only) is to prepare more nutritious foods at home or eat somewhere else. The news here is: Yes, you can go to McDonald's because they serve healthy foods. It can be the reason. Chris Koger News Editor ckoger@thepacker.com
