Salmonella concerns lead to tomato recall

After positive salmonella test for contamination, Big Red Tomato Packers is recalling numerous lots of fresh tomatoes.

Big Red TomatoesThe East Coast Florida tomato grower-shipper is recalling 790 20- and 25-pound boxes of tomatoes shipped in lot number 1106, the Fort Pierce, Fla.-based Big Red stated in a Feb. 7 news release.

A Jan. 28 routine random sampling of a single lot displayed the potential for contamination, Big Red officials said in the release.

Tomatoes from the lot were distributed to “a limited number of receivers” in Florida, North Carolina, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Minnesota, according to the release.

No illnesses have been reported and Big Red officials have notified all receivers of the potential contamination, according to the release.

“Big Red is currently reviewing all policies and procedures associated with food safety to minimize any future occurrence,” company officials stated in the release. “Big Red Tomato Packers is and will remain committed to being a quality producer of Florida tomatoes.”

Big Red recommends any remaining product be immediately discarded, according to the release.

Big Red grows and ships mature green and vine-ripe tomatoes.
