Florida woman named National Watermelon Queen

Dan Galbraith2014 National Watermelon Queen Brandi HarrisonSAVANNAH, Ga. – A convention celebrating milestones – the 100th anniversary of the National Watermelon Association and 50 years of the watermelon queen program – culminated in Brandi Harrison’s crowning as 2014 NWA Queen Feb. 22.

Harrison, the 2013 Florida Watermelon Queen, also earned the title of “Miss Jubilee” (the NWA’s equivalent of “Miss Congeniality”, as voted by her fellow competitors).

Allyson Brake, Lucama, N.C., a junior at Campbell University and the North Carolina queen, took first runner-up honors; Jordan Skipper, representing Alabama, was second runner-up.

The NWA netted a record $632,260 on its watermelon auction during the weekend.

The Giumarra Cos.’ John Corsaro won the adult watermelon eating contest; Madeleine Seabolt, a 9-year-old from Poway, Calif., triumphed in the children’s watermelon eating contest.
