UPDATED: Dole recalls Italian blend salads

(UPDATED COVERAGE, June 24) A positive test for listeria has prompted Dole Fresh Vegetables to recall thousands of bags of blended salads in the Midwest, South, the Eastern U.S. and Canada.

Westlake Village, Calif.-based Dole recalled 2,800 cases of Italian blend salads after a random test by the Ohio Department of Agriculture, the company announced June 22.

Dole spokesman Marty Ordman called it “an isolated instance” of a positive listeria test from one package of the salads.

Ohio officials obtained the sample from a retailer, Ordman said. He declined to name the retailer. Dole was notified June 20.

No illnesses were reported.

“We’ve had a few consumers calling in,” Ordman said. “It’s a very small lot. It’s pretty much through the system already.”

Customer service representatives were contacting retailers to verify the product was pulled from sale.

Dole distributed the salads to retailers in Wisconsin, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Maine, and the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick, Ontario and Quebec.

The salads have June 19 use-by dates, 7143000819 UPC codes and these product codes: 0049A157201A, 0049A157201B, 0049A157202A, 0049A157202B, 0686A157202A and 0686A157202B. The recall also includes 442 cases of Kroger Fresh Selections Italian Style Blend salad with June 19 use-by dates, UPC code 1111091045 and product codes A157201A and A157201B.

Dole’s last previous recall was for cantaloupes in March 2008, Ordman said.
