Fresh & Easy recalls organic spinach

Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market Inc. has recalled organic baby spinach over fears of listeria contamination.

El Segundo, Calif.-based Fresh & Easy recalled 5-ounce bags of its f&e-brand organic baby spinach with an “enjoy by” date of Aug. 1, according to a news release.

Listeria was found in a bag during a random Food and Drug Administration test. No illnesses had been reported as of Aug. 5.

The recalled bags were sold in California, Nevada and Arizona.

A recall story about a product that should have been pulled from the shelf a week ago. A little late isn't it?

Produce Guy/Steve,

Both valid comments, and these are two points that we try to follow up on for every recall story. Virtually every recall involves product that is already past its "best by" date. When did the FDA conduct the test and when did it notify Fresh & Easy?

perhaps someone should look into their facility and their processes, before we talk about "best by: dates or shelf life.... i've certainly seen first hand that their testing and qa, although they claim to be cutting edge, are far from it. salmonella on a watermelon and a cantaloupe found on the same day, on fruit that came from different suppliers and different growing areas? come on... to me this is just another strike against a company that has struggled to find it's true niche in the u.s., and is struggling to make friends amongst the supplier community. I know of at least 10 suppliers who have given up their business by choice.
