Charlie Bergmann, Bayer’s U.S. product manager/marketing for Luna based in North Carolina, said the fungicide is registered for use on apples, cherries, potatoes, almonds, pistachios, pecans, walnuts, watermelon and wine grapes.

The active ingredient in Luna is a systemic compound that is effective in its control of powdery mildew, scab, leaf spot, alternaria, botrytis and other diseases, he said.

Beside strong in-season control of cherry diseases such as brown rot blossom blight, powdery mildew, cherry leaf spot, Bergmann said that other benefits are surfacing.

“We are seeing some legitimate and secondary benefits with cherries and apples,” he said. “The secondary benefit in research and field trials is that the control is so strong in season, fruit is going into storage cleaner with higher quality and a longer (shelf life) in storage than other standard fungicides used in season,” he said.

Other potential indicated benefits that need more study include the effect of Luna fungicide on cherry firmness and sizing, Bergmann said. “The effect we are seeing in cherries is also replicated in apples, and we see similar effects in other fruit crops,” he said.
