(For updated coverage please see: Field test led to Pacific International romaine recall) Pacific International Marketing, Salinas, Calif., voluntarily recalled 19 cases of bulk romaine lettuce July 6 because of possible salmonella contamination.

No illnesses had been reported at the time the recall was issued.

The lettuce was sold at Vons and Pavilions stores in California and Nevada in bulk bins from July 2-4, according to the recall notice. The lettuce heads are banded with a red twist tie with “Safeway” printed on it.

Pacific International officials said in the recall notice that the source of the possible contamination was not immediately known. They issued the recall after tests at the field level showed a positive result for salmonella.

The recall notice states that the bulk romaine was distributed in Pacific International’s reusable plastic containers with 15 heads in each container. It has the code 12EASROM182 on the RPCs. The recall is only for bulk romaine distributed in RPCs. No carton or bagged romaine products are included in the recall.
